It has a core mystery plot that probably could have been totally explained in the first episode, if Steven actually asked obvious questions about his own life. But the show tends to ignore the core premise of the show (space rock women wars) in favor of wandering around the neighborhood talking to people about shit. It happens enough that it coined the term “Townies” : filler episodes about the lives of ordinary people with little actual relevance to the series premise..

Best solution I found is to just do a Bashed Patch on the newer Wrye Bash (which handles ESLs), and then manually create conflict resolution patches with xEdit.
