My setup 6 8 years old and bulky/heavy compared to what available now, but it was relatively very inexpensive (they always have sales, look out at xmas) and nothing ripped over the course of dozens of trips so I pretty happy with it. The only complaint is inadequate straps on the backpack for long distance walking. Might not be so bad if I wasn tiny and unfit.
bobby backpack I would not attempt without somewhat lightweight gear, as 40+lbs on my back while biking does not sound fun, i have an under 10lb (tarp, sleeping bag, pad, and essentials.) overnight kit (30f or warmer) that would do fine in just a back pack with the sleeping bag on the bars or even in the pack. I developing a new area of wilderness for rock climbing but its about 9 miles from the nearest parking lot. In terms of hiking and walking, you get a much more practical workout from a bobby backpack with a few free weights inside of it. You also look much less conspicuous.
