Unfortunately there no way to make backpacks, but 15 slots is actually one of the best capacities there is one start where you have two characters with capacity 8. It requires some planning as to what you need to carry. You can fit a fair amount of goods into 15 slots, the only thing you can easily stockpile is wood (I agree that stacking 2 wood is frustrating).
