The Pokemon series is in dire need of under the hood updates more than it is a change in creative direction or new gameplay experiences. Adding something like an adaptive AI to scale difficulty based on how optimally the trainer battles would go a long way towards bringing the post game battling experiences of Battle Tower/Frontier that so many enjoy to the main story without destroying the playability for kids.
