I not OP but I hope my input is welcome. I don know if my packing cube practices are “best”, but what I do is reserve a larger packing cube (13.75“ x 9.75” x 3“) for lighter stuff like T shirts, leggings, shorts, socks and underwear, and a same size cube for bulkier stuff like a pair of jeans, flannel shirt, button up. I can put together outfits from the first cube (I have a hoodie that I wore in transit) so I only need to mess w/ the 2nd one if I need more layers or warmth.

The laptop area is also barely padded which my laptop has got some dents from. Oh and the snowboard carry system as it stands is really pathetic.
