I really don think that going out in winter in big mountains without a shell of any kind is a responsible way for a new climber to behave, nor is it responsible as a suggestion. I wear my hardshell pretty infrequently, but no way would I be caught at 2,500m without it on a winter overnight. It doesn need to be burly GoreTex Pro, but going out without any sort of shell layer seems foolish.

I sometimes take really long portages and appreciate the extra comfort as well as multi compartments for organizing my stuff.
