The frame isn rigid so I say its max weight is probably around 20 lbs. But that a lot to carry for a day hike. It not adjustable and I think the torso range is between 15 and 19 inches and that feels about right. It seems to work out well for them. Half the company bikes to work. I see all kinds of people including managers where I work using a backpack.

However, if it is theft proof backpack simply not possible, make a list of places you want to visit so you can fit them into your budget and time constraints.
