Portage packs load easier, sit in the canoe better and allow you to carry more gear than a hiking pack.If you load a portage pack correctly they are just as comfortable to carry over the distances that you are usually covering on a portage.On my BWCA trips I usually have one XL Duluth style pack for gear and then dry bags for tents and sleeping bags.
