Of the many car driving tips that might be offered, this one isn't intuitive - accelerate through curves to gain better traction. Electric brakes are far superior to override brakes as they allow the brake bias to be adjusted and, as mentioned, the driver can manually actuate the trailer brakes to settle down trailer sway. Make sure the tires are rated for the weight and speed you are towing.

In order to be sure you are not overloaded you must weigh the vehicle and trailer fully loaded. WARNING: Never descend on any downhill run (short or long) with the gearbox in neutral - with no engine breaking whatsoever the vehicle will quickly run away and greatly increase the risk of the driver losing control.

Start by driving far enough to get your trailer and car is a straight line. Drive a little below the speed limit for safety. A pendulum type control will electronically adds more brake as you stop, but if you have your controller turned all the way up, the slightest pressure on the pedal could lock your trailer brakes.

It has been stated that every time the brakes are used fuel is wasted. Many vehicles like the RAM 1500 feature special driving modes and technology to make towing easier. Once the above points have been fixed and a little common sense is used, towing a caravan or camper trailer need not be any more difficult than driving a car by itself.

Be aware that reduced speed limits usually apply when towing vehicles, and remember to extend courtesy to vehicles following you by allowing them to pass. If you're towing a travel trailer for the first time, you have to start learning with a full load. Trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming properly equipped vehicle, plus driver and one passenger.

Tires have to be checked frequently with a trailer because a flat can go unnoticed on multiple axle trailers while it is being towed. Note that all the information provided is based on my experience of Towing Service caravans and other trailers. As a rule of thumb, if the trailer and towing vehicle are fairly leveled with the hauled load, then everything is good.
