I was torn as I likely could have reduced my overall hardware by getting the iPhone X, but didn't want to risk the expense this year as the resale value of the 8 is likely high enough (same for my Kindle) to reconsider next year. In retrospect I think the X would have been a good choice, as the 8 works well enough that I rarely in search of my Kindle and a larger device would almost certainly mean no longer using my Kindle enough to justify keeping it. I knew that the hand feel wouldn't be as good (and since the 8 has a glass back it's even more prone to sliding out of the hand), but the larger screen means more games work on it (as they are designed these days under the assumption of that screen size, and so sometimes feel unplayable on smaller screens), typing is easier, and reading is more comfortable..
