Nothing wrong with a wheelie. I personally like to have all my options available and my full size 45L carry on wheelie also has full backpack harness (w/ weight bearing hipbelt). I also take my regular 12L EDC messenger bag (which rigs as backpack too).

It keeps stuff pretty dry, we used the trailer and bag on a tour through Nova Scotia, and got really dumped on for 50+ miles, but our stuff stayed dryOrtlieb panniers and a rack have worked well for me over the last 5 years. For like $11 a day, it MUCH better than carrying around a handful of things I rarely used but gave me peace knowing I was covered (I the kind of person that doesn like getting caught without the small stupid things).
