Typically if bears are a big deal in the area, rangers are really on top of checking campsites (and will issue tickets, confiscate food and gear left out) to ensure people are being safe because they don want the bears in the campsite. Franconia Ridge: It a beautiful place no doubt, but the day I hit it it was completely socked in with clouds, visibility of maybe 50 yards, and cold and rainy so I was a bit bummed out. But as I was crossing Lincoln the clouds inverted and I was walking along the ridge with just a sea of clouds below me to each side.
