What Roman numerals are great for is counting stuff. You can count troops and grain supplies and so on very easily with this number system because it additive, unlike our hybrid system which adds concision by using multiplication (the so called number system we use can be attributed to the Indian subcontinent, we got it by way of the Arabic world, so we call sometimes call it the Arabic number system). Roman numbers are handy for counting bunches of things very quickly, you have it all arranged into equal piles, then those piles arranged in equal piles, and so on till you have a convenient number of things to count off, then you count off all the items in a single pile, and so on.
