I start off with a more durable car camping tent, especially if you aren sure if you try backpacking. The unfortunate reality is that tents well suited to frontcountry camping are not anti theft backpack well suited to backpacking, and vice versa. Tents like the Galaxi and Elixir can do double duty as a sort of in between, but they are still quite heavy and very bulky for backpacking.

Expect hard uncomfortable cold ground, sloping sites, exposed rocks and roots, pooling water when it rains, dirty rain splatter, and rodents. You need to be able to block both to some degree or you gonna have a bad time. For stability you will want a pack that has dual sternum straps and reasonably beefy side compression to compress your load. And the Nathan FireBall (7.5L) as well as the Hoka Evo (16L or something, it much bigger) and love them both.
