Most of the ground sites are sub optimal (due to the rolling topography of the Appalachians) and extremely impacted. Expect hard uncomfortable cold ground, sloping sites, exposed rocks and roots, pooling water when it rains, dirty rain splatter, and rodents. Because you will not want to carry your backpack with you all the time and like a said in the heat you will want to have as less things as possible so you will leave your main bag at the place where you staying and continue to explore with smaller bag ( for your water, sunscreen, snacks, umbrella,etc ) I recently discovered this 2in1 bag as good option because I can have my main backpack and fanny pack for small items such as money/phone/sunglasses to keep them relatively safe but easy to access when i commuting from bus to hotel and when I arrive at the place where i staying i can leave main backpack and have fannypack or daypack for daily stuff when i exploring the city.
