In Tanzania, there were plenty of dedicated campsites, and bush camping was also a theft proof backpack viable option in rural areas. Some locals would even let you camp on their property. I do a hang in a tree just to get it away from my tent, but to be honest its less about bears than about mini bears. Critters scratching at my tent/lurking around annoys the hell out of me when I am trying to sleep and I really don want a mouse gnawing a hole in my gear in search of a meal.
