If your vehicle has suddenly decided to stop working, or you have been involved in a car accident, then you will most likely have to hire the help of a recovery service to come and collect your car for you. And most people assume that towing a car will be less expensive than shipping a car, but when you factor in hotel stays, road food, frequent fill ups, the cost of renting a trailer or tow dolly (which can be almost as much as shipping), and the long-term effects of long-distance hauling, vehicle shipping costs can start to look very reasonable.

Be aware that many local ordinances limit the liability of the city, county or state for any damage or loss when an offending vehicle (or a vehicle reasonably considered to be offending at the time enforcement action was taken) is removed, towed, seized, held or stored.

If you're towing a disabled vehicle at night, its headlights must light up the towing connection. Secure the coupler to the hitch ball on the towing car and tighten the coupler until you achieve a secured connection. It can be expensive to repair a vehicle that you shouldn't have towed in the first place.

Most tow ropes and bars are supplied with an ‘On Tow' sign, which needs to be displayed on the back of the car being towed. Vehicles are commonly towed in three scenarios: 1) at the direction of the police; 2) at the direction of a private property owner; or 3) at the owner's direction.

With a dolly, you won't be able to go in reverse, and maneuvering while towing any type of auto trailer will be a challenge. If the car has power steering or power-assisted brakes, you'll need to apply a little elbow grease to operate it when the engine's off and it's being towed.
