Edit: one other thing about helmets is that it must be replaced after it's involved in a crash (unless you completely avoid hitting your head). Once a helmet has sustained one major crash, its integrity is compromised and it likely won't protect your head in a second. Don't get a helmet that's so expensive it can't be replaced!.
