I start off with a more durable car camping tent, especially if you aren sure if you try backpacking. Expect hard uncomfortable cold ground, sloping sites, exposed rocks and roots, pooling water when it rains, dirty rain splatter, and rodents. The (more important, IMO) factors are moisture and wind. You need to be able to block both to some degree or you gonna have a bad time. For stability you will want a pack that has dual sternum straps and reasonably beefy side compression to compress your load. And the Nathan FireBall (7.5L) as well as the Hoka Evo (16L or something, it much bigger) and love them both.
