Unless the values have changed, I believe the despawn timer is 1 hour for improvised backpacks (or 30 minutes, cannot remember), and 4 hours for all other backpacks.The "players in the vicinity" qualifier is an interesting one. They may never despawn if someone is covering them (or any item or body for that matter). I do not know the distance, however, or if the player is required to be looking at the item.An interesting test would be to go on a persistent server with a 6 hour restart timer.

If it isn't enemies pulling out exploding drones every 20 seconds, it's medics throwing those emp grenades that some how hurt you as well, then there's robot dogs just walking on up to you, and worst of all it's several enemies just running right at you with no regards to their own life.
